Support Legal Services for Boston's Most Vulnerable
With your support, we can give people a voice in decisions that can drastically alter their lives.
The Lawyers Clearinghouse is a small but mighty nonprofit. With just a handful of staff members, the Clearinghouse leverages millions of dollars of legal services every year to provide pro bono legal advice to some of Boston's (and surrounding communities') most vulnerable residents.
Each dollar you give allows the Clearinghouse to connect lawyers with individuals who desperately need legal advice, but who cannot afford an attorney. The attorneys representing these individuals are often helping them obtain or retain public benefits that allow them to provide for their most basic needs – food, shelter, medicine, etc. For example, in the past year, attorneys at my firm (1) kept a young family with three small children housed together by defeating a motion for summary judgment where the landlord sought to evict them; (2) obtained disability benefits for a young woman suffering from a myriad of health conditions that made her unable to work and support herself, and (3) sealed the criminal record of a man with four convictions on his record from his teenage years – without that record, he is much more likely to obtain meaningful employment and housing.
I have been working with the Clearinghouse for seven years. I began as a volunteer attorney attending the Clearinghouse's legal clinics at homeless shelters. I met with clients and took their cases. My very first client was a woman (and her teenage son) who were on the brink of becoming homeless. They had a strong case against the housing authority that was terminating their Section 8 voucher, so I brought a lawsuit. The housing authority reviewed their decision and decided they had made a mistake - my client and her son would continue to receive their benefits. And they remained in their home, together and safe, rather than on the streets.
Four years ago, I began managing the legal clinics at my firm, and I provide guidance to the attorneys taking the cases. And I now serve on the Clearinghouse's Board of Directors.
Please consider donating to this small nonprofit that makes a big impact in the lives of the most vulnerable of us.
